Introduction<\/o:p><\/b><\/h1>\n\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sustainable Soil for Life Association (SSLA) is a Cambodian NGO\nthat envisions a sustainable, resilient, and fair food system that ensures healthy\nlivelihoods and socioeconomic well-being in Cambodia. SSLA’s mission is to\nsupport vulnerable smallholder farmers and rural youth to improve their\nlivelihoods by promoting agroecological practices.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n\n

SSLA’s impact-driven and farmer-oriented approach focuses on\ndiversifying cropping systems, improving soil health, enhancing biodiversity,\nand reducing reliance on external inputs. The organization builds farmer\ncapacities through farmer-to-farmer knowledge and practice sharing and supports\ncooperative and community leaders in developing sustainable agribusinesses and\nbuilding local market networks that create value for agroecological produce.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n\n

SSLA also works with vulnerable young people to promote\nentrepreneurship and leadership, increasing their engagement with their\ncommunities. The organization provides vocational training programs in\nagroecology and agri-food processing, as well as agri-business incubator\nprograms focusing on circular economy and agroecology innovations, to support\nyouth starting their own businesses.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

SSLA Impact\nMeasurement<\/o:p><\/b><\/h3>\n\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n\n

SSLA<\/span> has a strong MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and\nLearning) system in place. SSLA uses the Tool for Agroecology Performance\nEvaluation (TAPE) to assess the impacts over project cycles from 2019. <\/span>SSLA’s work is having a\npositive impact on the lives of farmers and young people who work with<\/span>\nthem<\/span>.\nFarmers are reporting increased yields, improved soil health, and reduced r<\/span>eliance\non chemical inputs. <\/span>Young people are gaining skills and knowledge that will help\nthem become entrepreneurs and leaders in the agricultural sector.<\/span> <\/span>SSLA is a small\norganization, but it is making a big difference in the lives of farmers and\nyoung people in northwestern Cambodia. The organization is helping to build a\nmore sustainable future for the region. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

SSLA Implemented Projects<\/o:p><\/b><\/h1>\n\n

Sustainable Soil for Life Association’s key achievements are mostly\nfocused on farmer empowerment and youth vocational education:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Food Waste Day<\/b> Awareness Campaign,\n2023, Wefood and DCA HQ Denmark.<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>Provided Wefood with <\/b>technical assistance\nin developing and producing videos for an awareness campaign on “Fight\nagainst Food Waste” for Food Waste Day 2023. Funded by Wefood, a Danish\nsupermarket selling surplus food to fight food waste, in cooperation with DANIDA,\nInternational Thematic Working Group \u201cFood across Borders\u201d.<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Enhancing Agroecological Transition (EAT)\n2021-2023<\/b>, funded by DANIDA Frame,<\/b> DCA Cambodia, <\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The EAT project aimed to empower small-scale\nfarmers and rural youth by promoting agroecological food systems that improve\nlivelihoods and well-being. <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project benefited 125 farmers, who shared\nand co-created knowledge during exchange visits, forums, and peer-to-peer\npractical training and coaching.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project supported over 60 farmers to enhance\ntheir knowledge in the production of bio-fertilizers, the integration of trees,\nand saving seeds. <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project supported 37 advanced farmers to\nimprove Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) to promote organic food and\nagroecological produce and sell their products directly to consumers and rural\nmarkets, urban shops, and farmers’ markets.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project provided 47 young people with access\nto vocational skills in agroecology and decent work through a vocational\ntraining program and a business incubator program that supported them in\nstarting their own businesses and applying agroecological approaches. Fourteen\nof these young people started beekeeping farming, mushroom farming, and\nfertilizer production businesses.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Agroecology Live Learning Lab (AE-LLab),\n2022-2023, Danida Innovation Funds<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>SSLA co-implemented the project with DCA under\nDANIDA innovation funds within the area of \u2018building resilient communities\u2019\naimed to develop a new approach for sharing knowledge and learning about\nagroecology.<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project focused on improving the capacity of\n7 DCA local partners, farmers and building bridges with relevant universities.\nAside from knowledge sharing activities, the project worked to leverage past\ninnovation efforts outputs such as the \u2018ECOkasekor app\u2019 and the \u2018Farmers\u2019\nHandbook on Agroecology in Cambodia\u2019. <\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The AE LLAB project shared his experience and\nknowledge acquired from previous projects with other DCA partner staff during\nworkshops and his farm was also the location for providing practical training\non agroecology.<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Cr\u00e9ation\ndes Maisons de l’Agro\u00e9cologie (MAE), 2021-2024, R\u00e9gion Occitanie. <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>SSLA co-designed and implemented a project that provided\nfinancial and technical support to 3 ACs in building construction, starting and\nstrengthening new sustainable businesses and services, including, post-harvest\nwashing and packing, agri-food processing, drinking water production, and natural\nsoap production. Province de Battambang, co-funded by Region Occitanie,\nFinancement d\u2019investissement n\u00b0 21011443, in partnership with ASSOCIATION\nBRAHMA KESA and Vivre de sa Terre Association.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Upscaling Climate Resilient Agriculture:\nTransition to Agroecology (CRA), 2021, co-implemented by DCA and SSLA, funded\nby DANIDA Innovation Funds <\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>The project was co-implemented by DCA Cambodia\nwith SSLA technical assistance. SSLA trained 23\nagricultural technicians and NGO staff in agroecology who became trainers in 4\nprovinces.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>SSLA has developed new learning materials have\nbeen developed based on on-farm experiments conducted in collaboration with\nfarmers in their vegetable gardens in Battambang province. The main output of\nthis project was the creation of the \u201cFarmer Handbook in Agroecology.\nCambodia\u201d.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Improve supply\nchains of PGS-organic vegetables in Battambang, 2020, <\/span>USAID-funded Feed\nthe Future Cambodia Harvest II, <\/b>co-implemented with\n<\/span>Laey Baitong Co., Ltd.<\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA trained over\n200 farmers in the Participatory Guarantee System, of these, 100 farmers\nincreased supply volume regularly and signed farming contacts. Over 120\ndemonstration plots have been set up in compliance with the Participatory Guarantee\nSystem and 40 peer reviews\/inspections were conducted.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>\u201cBank on it (BOT): Preserving Cambodia\u2019s\nAgricultural Genetic Resources\u201d<\/b>, co-implemented with DCA Cambodia and\nfunded by DANIDA Innovation Funds<\/b> <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA\ncoached 13 outstanding farmers, who became master farmers and leaders and adopted\na comprehensive set of agroecological practices in 3 districts of Battambang\nprovince.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>15\nfarmers adopted the principles of the Participatory Guarantee System, including\npeer-to-peer inspection, and decision-making to certify their products.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA established\nlocal value chains for agroecological and organic vegetables including\nproducers, collectors, transporters, buyers, and consumers in Battambang\nprovince.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>SSLA trained 56 farmers on how to save local\nseeds and grow vegetables using agroecological practices. <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>AGILE: Agriculture Information Livelihoods\nand Enhancement (2018-2020), Danida Innovation Funds<\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The Agriculture Information Livelihoods and\nEnhancement (AGILE) project is a 3-year project, co-implemented by SSLA with\nDCA Cambodia and funded by DANIDA that aims to increase smallholder farmers’\naccess to climate-resilient farming information.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>SSLA developed a prototype of a farming\nrecommendations algorithm and conducted a survey to study the rural\nconnectivity level and process around the use of the KSF app in Kampong Speu\nprovince.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>SSLA improved the app, which was renamed \u201cECOKasekor\napp\u201d (Ecofarmer) and integrated a video-sharing platform for farmers.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Flood Humanitarian Recovery, 2021, funded by\nDCA, Project Number: 1010279-72<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>SSLA assessed the needs of flood-affected HHs and\nprovided 364 food-affected vulnerable households with emergency cash assistance,\nin collaboration and PIN, DCA and NDMC.<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Covid-19 Humanitarian Response, 2020, funded\nby DCA, Project Number: 1010279-64<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project conducted a market assessment and\nprovided 292 COVID-19 economically affected vulnerable households with minimum\npackage items and cash assistance voucher transfers, in collaboration and PIN,\nDCA, and NDMC.<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Contract Title: Farmers Field School on Agroecology and Seed Banking,\n2019. Funded by DCA, Reference No.: 1010279-59<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA\ntrained and supported 98 farmers (54 women) to participate in 41 sessions of\nfarmer field school, including 39 who adopted agroecological practices, 21\nfarmers using local seed varieties of vegetables, and 17 farmers committed to\nthe development of seed banks.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Contract Title: Khmer Smart Farming Application Testing and Redesign,\n2018. Funded by DCA, Reference no.: 1010279-38<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA\nhas conducted the test phase of the KSF mobile app with over 200 users and\ndeveloped a new app backend and frontend design prototype \u2026 the recommended\nback-end back design improvement and  app\nbackend and frontend<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Contract Title: Crop Database Development and Advisory, 2018. Funded by\nDCA, Reference no.: 1010279-29<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA\ntrained and coached 95 vulnerable small-scale farmers (67 women farmers) in\n2017-2018, including 35 farmers who adopted at least one agroecological\npractice to reduce chemical pesticide and fertilizer use in 6 districts in\nBattambang province.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Training\nof Trainers for TVET teachers in agroecology, 2020. Funded by Brahma Kesa\nAssociation and Bayon Education and Development.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA\ntrained 10 young teachers who completed 8-months of Training of Trainers (700\nhours) for TVET education from Jan to Oct. 2020, who are all became agroecology\ntrainers in 2 vocational schools in 3 targeted provinces (Battambang, Siem Reap\nand Oddar Meanchey).<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Piloting Vocational Training in Agroecology:\nAssociate Degree, 2017-2019, funded by Vivre de sa Terre (VDST)<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA trained\n15 dropout and vulnerable students who completed 2 years of vocational training\nin agroecology, became skilled young technicians in agroecology engaged among\ncommunity. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>SSLA trained\nalso 180 students from universities (UBB, UME) about soil fertility management\nin 2 months short training courses.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Development of a learning module about soil\nfertility in Khmer language, ALiSEA Small Grant Facility, grant provided by GRET,\nfunded by AFD, 2017. <\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>The project<\/span> has reached and raised awareness\namong more than 1 million young Cambodians about the agroecology approach with\n10 online tutorial videos developed, 10 educational posters, and 40\nillustrations of agroecological practices.<\/span><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Production of an Animation Video \u201cLife in the\nsoil\u201d, 2026, in cooperation with Phare Creative Studio, funded by Vivre de sa\nTerre (VDST), 2016. <\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>The project<\/span> produced a 3-minute animation video spot\nwhich aimed to awareness on the importance of living soil and introduce soil\nconservation principles. 3 screening sessions have been organized and reached\nover 1000 young people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Aide\nau d\u00e9veloppement de la Maison Familiale Rurale (MFR) de Day Damram, Banan, 2016,\nco-financ\u00e9e par EDM.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project provided technical assistance to the\nrecently established rural training center MRF, and reviewed and improved the\ntraining curriculum, student recruitment process, and hands-on training\nfacilities.<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>Improvement of\nBlack Pepper Value Chains in Samlot District, Battambang, 2016-2017, funded by\nVivre de sa Terre (VDST).<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>The project supported 22\nblack pepper producers (13 women), registered in a farmer association named\nSamlot Khmer Organic Pepper Association (SKOPA) under MoI, in Song Commune,\nSamlot District, increasing access to the local market, adopting agroecological\npractices and increasing sales at a fair price on the export market.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span> \u201cMy problem, My solution\u201d: Empower women and\npeople with disabilities through theatre and income generation, 2017,<\/span><\/b> co-implemented by Phare Ponleu Selpak, funded by OXFAM.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>The project trained 25\nwomen living in poor communities helping them to start small businesses and\nurban vegetable gardens.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>\u201cOur River and our\nForest\u201d: Empower Por Indigenous women in Ta Toak, 2016, funded by OXFAM and\nco-implemented with CCT. <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span><\/span>The project coached and\nsupported 15 indigenous women on forest tree and vegetable garden integration\nin the mountain area of Samkos, in Ta Toak Commune, Samlot District,\nBattambang, and diversified their diets and their source of income to reduce\ndeforestation.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The project\nprovided 6 underprivileged artists with assistance to create artwork under the theme\nof rice peasant livelihoods in Cambodia. <\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n

–         \n<\/span>The project designed and implemented an organic\nfarm in Bantay Chmear for EDM, including water harvesting, permanent soil\ncovers, tree integration, and a crop-livestock integrated system.<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n\n
